莆田船主吴天桂解放前娶了三房太太。妈祖解放后，回家候上新婚姻法颁布，电影工作组要求吴天桂只能留一位妻子。妈祖台湾籍国民党兵林奇伟解放后滞留莆田，回家候上一心想回到台湾与妻儿团聚。电影林奇伟骗吴天桂台湾尚允许一夫多妻，妈祖于是回家候上两人密谋偷渡台湾。最终吴天桂与三姨太玉莲到了台北，电影其余人失散。妈祖吴天桂不忘承诺，回家候上千辛万苦，电影终于找到林奇伟妻儿。妈祖三十年后，回家候上吴天桂率妈祖信众，电影直航回到妈祖故里莆田，完成两岸分离以来的首次民间直航。
